I. The first movement of this sonatina was born out of an improvisation; all of the musical material in the first movement is derived from this improvisation.
II. I had a young piano student who, rather than listening to me, was noodling around on the piano (as they often do); something he played became the opening idea of the second movement of this sonatina.
III. The third movement is a toccata whose middle section is probably inspired by Prokofiev.
