John Muir's Song (2012)
During our honeymoon, my wife and I travelled west to Colorado and Arizona, where we visited Rocky Mountain National Park and Grand Canyon National Park, among other places. It seemed as though everywhere we went we ran into quotes from John Muir, a nineteenth century naturalist whose exaltations on nature I’d also encountered in Alaska. His presence was ubiquitous in our travels.
Coincidentally, about a month after returning home, I encountered some of Muir’s poetry and more of his other writing. As I reminisced about the beauty of the West, it seemed like a perfect poem to set to music.
