Four Bagatelles (2010)
I. Small Pond
II. Big Fish
III. Big Pond
IV. Small Fish
Each bagatelle’s title is a reference to the saying “big fish in a small pond” and its implied opposite “small fish in a big pond.” The movements reflect the feelings one might associate with the metaphors. Each bagatelle has a different primary focal instrument, and the other instruments generally accompany the melody using different simultaneous meters. “Small Fish” begins as a canon before the viola takes its melody.
