16 Views of Mt. Fuji (2009)
Each piece in this set of solo piano pieces was written to accompany an image by Katsushika Hokusai, a nineteenth century Japanese Printmaker. Hokusai's 36 Views of Mt. Fuji is a series of images from throughout Japan, each one featuring Mt. Fuji, sometimes prominently displayed, sometimes just a suggestion in the background.
At times the music mimes the images, musically approximating the depictions; at other times it simply evokes the feelings I associate with the images. This piece negotiates my desire to write a large-scale solo piano piece with my predilection for short pieces.
